Background
DanceMakers Gymnastics began with the dream of promoting children’s growth and development of themselves through the sport of gymnastics and all that it encompasses.
Bob and Mijka Hooper established DanceMakers Gymnastics in their hometown of Owen Sound after spending considerable time studying, training, working and performing in Toronto. They opened DanceMakers dance studio in 1994, and have enjoyed an expansion of dance programs and enrollment to include over 400 dancers.
When Head Coach, Petra Ballantyne (Mijka’s sister) moved to the area, they recognized the need for a gymnastics program which would teach gymnastics skills, but also a program that would enhance self-esteem and confidence through achievement and enjoyment of the sport. All gymnastics programs follow the national Can Gym program, and are geared toward age and ability of the gymnasts. Programs start at age 2 to teens.
DanceMakers Gymnastics is a state-of-the-art facility, with over 9000 square feet of designated gymnastics space, making it the largest gymnastics facility in the Grey Bruce area. The gymnastics facility has all brand new Speith Anderson equipment including an extra large sprung floor, four beams, two sets of bars, single bar, full vault with runway, 30 foot tumble track with port a pit, and a complete specialized kindergym area for the younger gymnast. The facility also has a large lobby area, large changeroom and bathrooms. A beverage and snack bar compliment the spacious reception area.
DanceMakers Boutique is an on-site dance and gymnastics store, where gymnasts and dancers can purchase their clothing and footwear conveniently at one location. The Boutique currently sells brands such as Mondor, So Danca, Bloch, Capezio, and Ainsliewear – the official bodysuit of The National Ballet of Canada.
DanceMakers also offers dance programs in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Kinder Dance. Classes are available for students in Beginner to Advanced Levels, starting at age 3 to adults. There are discounts for students who wish to participate in both gymnastics and dance programs.
Parents can utilize the Sportmakers fitness facility, which is located besides DanceMakers. Special parent membership rates are available to parents of gymnasts or dancers!
